Our smiles say it all. Our very first marlin while sportfishing in Cabo San Lucas.

As a travel advisor, I’ve been fortunate to experience some truly remarkable destinations around the world—from the wild beauty of New Zealand to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. But when my husband and I had the opportunity to visit Cabo San Lucas for the first time, we discovered a destination that captured our hearts in a whole new way.

Through Top Anglers Sportfishing’s complimentary charter program for travel professionals, I was able enjoy my first Cabo sportfishing experience and see firsthand why so many people rave about Cabo as a top-tier fishing and leisure destination. And let me just say—it was an experience we’ll never forget.

Planning our Cabo Sportfishing Experience

Setting up our charter was simple. After I had registered as a travel professional through their website, I communicated with Jason Bailey, the managing partner, leading up to our charter.

When Jason talks about Cabo sportfishing, his enthusiasm is infectious, and he seemed genuinely as excited about the experience for us as we were for ourselves.  Even though we had never experienced sportfishing in Cabo, Jason assured us that no experience was necessary and that roughly half of their charter guests are individuals who are first timers, and often families with young kids and teens. He advised us that their crews would not only act as our guides, but also as our coaches, walking us through the whole process of sportfishing here for big fish.

A Morning in Paradise

We started the day before sunrise at the marina, where the Top Anglers team, including Victor, founder and Jason’s business partner along with his sons, greeted us with warm smiles. Top Anglers mantra is “treat every guest as if they are family” and it felt like we were.

It becomes very apparent when visiting the Cabo marina, that sportfishing is a really big attraction here, with fishing boats (and luxury fishing yachts in many cases!) lined up as far as the eye can see.  I learned that Cabo is known as the marlin capital of the world and the energy was contagious—tons of boats heading out, lines getting prepped, and the sun breaking over Land’s End. I’ve arranged fishing trips for my clients in places like Ketchikan and Homer, Alaska, but Cabo has its own rhythm. The mix of ocean calm and electric excitement of a destination that hosts the biggest fishing tournaments in the world was unlike anywhere else.

We got a great and close up view of El Arco, also known as Lands End on our way out to fish.

Shortly after arriving, Victor escorted us to our boat, which was idling, with the crew ready, and the boat stocked with food and beverages that were included and that we were able to select from a menu provided to us in advance.

A nice highlight of the morning was cruising past the famous and iconic “El Arco” or The Arch, which is also known as Lands End, located at the very southern tip of the Baja Peninsula where the crew offered to stop for a few minutes so we could take photos. If you or your clients go fishing with Top Anglers, there really is no need to book an additional excursion to see Lands End, which will save some time and money. After our brief stop for our photos, we headed out to sea with the crew readying and setting the gear by the time we hit the open ocean just a few minutes later.

The Catch of a Lifetime while Sportfishing in Cabo

A few hours into our trip, we hooked into something big. Really big. With the guidance of our experienced crew, I took the rod first, and the fight was on. If you have never witnessed a hooked marlin exploding from the ocean’s surface like a rocket with fins, it is truly a sight to behold.  The aerial display that the big marlin provided to us demonstrated just how powerful these fish truly are. After an incredible 40-minute battle with my husband joining in the fight (and a few sore muscles later), the crew brought our fish alongside the boat—a stunning 106-inch striped marlin. It was our first marlin ever and seeing that magnificent fish up close was absolutely breathtaking.

Why Cabo San Lucas (and Top Anglers) Stands Out

Beyond the epic fishing, what impressed me most was the seamless blend of world-class hospitality, and authentic local charm. Cabo has a unique way of combining adventure with relaxation—you can spend the morning chasing marlin and the afternoon enjoying fresh ceviche and a margarita by the beach.

For travel professionals, I can’t recommend Top Anglers Sportfishing’s travel advisor program enough. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience their charters firsthand, gain insider knowledge for your clients, and enjoy a truly memorable day on the water fishing for some of the largest and most powerful fish that can be found anywhere on the planet.

My Final Thoughts

As we flew home to Atlanta, my husband and I agreed that Cabo San Lucas exceeded every expectation. The beauty of the destination, the warmth of the people, and the thrill of that unforgettable catch—it all reminded me why I love helping others plan their travels and experiences.

If you’ve ever dreamed of landing a trophy fish or simply want to experience Cabo’s magic from a different perspective, Top Anglers Sportfishing is the team to do it with. I’m already planning to send some of my clients their way—and maybe come back myself for round two!
